The soundtrack for Moulin Rouge was compiled by the film’s director, Baz Luhrmann’s (Romeo and Juliet) and is more than just a soundtrack. As with all soundtracks, it enhances the scenes of the movie, but in this case the actors, a love struck poet (Ewan McGregor) and Courtesan Satine(Nicole Kidman), not only act in the film but also sing on many of the tracks. Collectively the two movie stars contributed on seven of the fifteen selections. As a matter of fact, I found both actors were in fine voice. Some of the other songs on this CD include David Bowie performing “Nature Boy”. Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Mya perform “Lady Marmalade”.Montreal’s own Rufus Wainwright on piano-and-accordion performs on “Complainte De La Butte.” The album picks up some velocity on Fatboy Slim’s fast paced “Because We Can” and is once again slowed down by two renditions of Nat “King” Cole standards. This compilation album is jam packed with talent (Bono, Beck, Massive Attack, Phil Collins and Dolly Parton). This wide-ranging soundtrack is filled with strong musical sentiments that compliment the film, as all outstanding soundtracks should.
